Comparative Outcomes of SCOM/SCOLA Versus IPOM PLUS in Umbilical and Para-Umbilical Hernia Repairs

Comparative Outcomes of SCOM/SCOLA Versus IPOM PLUS in Umbilical and Para-Umbilical Hernia Repairs

Summary: This prospective observational study compared two laparoscopic techniques — Subcutaneous Onlay Mesh (SCOM/SCOLA) and Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh Plus (IPOM PLUS) — in 60 patients with umbilical and para-umbilical hernias. IPOM PLUS showed shorter operative time and hospital stay, while SCOM/SCOLA offered better postoperative pain control but higher seroma rates. Both methods achieved effective hernia repair with distinct advantages depending on patient factors.

Key Highlights:

  • IPOM PLUS: shorter operative time (79 vs 94 min) and hospital stay (1.8 vs 5 days)
  • SCOM/SCOLA: significantly lower postoperative pain from day 7 onward
  • Higher seroma rate with SCOM/SCOLA (86.7% at week 1 vs 6.7%)
  • Both techniques effective; choice should be individualized
