Health and a healthy lifestyle are the aspirations of many, but achieving such goals is influenced by a complex interplay of individual choices, intrinsic factors, external influences and context. In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a ‘state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’, and this definition has not changed since.1 The definition is equally applicable to people with chronic wounds as it is to the general population.
